“To my mind, having a care and concern for others is the highest of human qualities” ~ Fred Hollows AC
What an impact FRED had on the world. Through his initiatives and the ongoing work of The Fred Hollows Foundation, it is believed that ONE MILLION people, not born into privilege, around the world can now see.
Perhaps his greatest legacy though is his work with Indigenous communities here in Australia. He set up the Aboriginal Medical Service in Sydney’s Redfern and went on to support medical services being established right around the country to care for Indigenous people. He was awarded an honorary AO (honorary as he was not an Australian citizen at the time) in 1983 but refused on the grounds that he was disgusted at the government's lack of care and attention to indigenous eye care. He was later awarded a Companion of Australia (AC) in 1993.
He spent three years on the ground visiting remote communities to provide eye care and research eye health, performing at least 1000 operations after examining about 62 thousand people.
